Post 16 was formed by WW I Veterans in 1919. Post 16 was there in the early days of the American Legion and is one of the original Legion Posts in Connecticut. Since that time, Post 16 has grown and supported many of the Legion’s Programs as well as local Americanism and Veteran Assistance initiatives.
Presently Sutter-Terlizzi Post 16 has approximately 340 Legion Members, 60 Auxiliary members and 120 Sons of the American Legion. Post 16 is active in many local and statewide programs for Americanism. Below are just a few of these programs.
Annual City-wide Blue Star Banner Ceremony on Armed Forces Day to recognize Shelton families that have loved ones currently serving in the armed forces.
High School Oratorical Competition where, Shelton High School students vie for college scholarships awarded by The American Legion by demonstrating their knowledge of the United States Constitution in public speaking contents on local, regional and national levels.
Each year, local boys experience the benefits of good sportsmanship and team play through American Legion Baseball.
Every summer, Post 16 selects, outstanding Shelton High School students to attend Boys State. During the weeklong program, participants receive instruction on citizenship and experience first-hand how their state and federal governments function.
Posts 16 supports Boys Scout and Girl Scout programs, to foster wholesome development of America’s youth.
Our Flag Education program, teaches flag etiquette and proper display of the United States Flag to students in schools and at hands-on programs at Post 16.
The American Legion has been a leader in the observance of patriotic holidays, such as Flag Day, Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day and Veterans Day.
The Post takes part in several annual projects in support of the State Veterans Home in Rocky Hill, Connecticut.
Post 16 is host to the third district of the American Legion Department of Connecticut’s Annual Walk-A-Thon to support the Children’s Miracle Network.
Post 16 meets the 1st Tuesday of the Month at 7PM September thru June on Post grounds at 295 Old Bridgeport Ave, Shelton, CT.

Benefits: In addition to the opportunity to swap sea stories, trench talk, Marine mumbles, or whatever your branch of service may call them, we seek as a group to enhance our member’s benefits by providing the following – opportunities to network, engage in community service, practice advocacy at your level, and attend special events.
Regular monthly meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month, 6 PM, at Post 16 facility at 295 Old Bridgeport Ave, Shelton, CT.
